My 10 Greatest Influences in the Game of Basketball :: by Jerry Colangelo
Jerry Colangelo is one of the great executives in NBA history. Four times he was named NBA Executive of the Year (1976, 1981, 1989, 1993). In 2004, he was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. During his career, he has owned the Phoenix Suns, WNBA Phoenix Mercury, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
10. Eddie Gottlieb. Eddie is truly one of the founders of our great game. He developed much of my philosophy towards the game and the rules of the game with his mentoring of me on a personal basis. He instilled in me an understanding of the “the spirit of the rule” whenever rules changes were being discussed.
9. Arnold “Red” Auerbach. His mere presence demanded respect and his track record as a coach and general manager are unparalleled. He raised the bar for the NBA in many ways. An incredible competitor, Red took no prisoners. I learned a great deal from him.
8. Red Holzman. Red helped break me into the NBA back in 1966 with the Chicago Bulls. As we traveled together scouting college basketball prospects, I learned a great deal about the nuances of the game, the game’s history, and the characters who played it. Red coached with dignity and always had the respect of his players.
7. Russ Granik. Russ spent three decades in the NBA and many years as deputy commissioner. He made great contributions to the NBA and also, in another capacity, with the Basketball Hall of Fame. In the heated battle of competition, Russ was a soothing influence on relationships inside and outside the game.
6. Wayne Embry. One of the real pioneers representing the African-American community in basketball, as a Hall of Famer, outstanding general manager, and terrific friend. He offered great insights into people and the game. I admire and respect him a great deal. Wayne has always had a passion for the game.
5. Bobby Knight. Another one of the great all-time coaches and students of the game. He is a fierce competitor who shared much of his journey with me because of our personal relationship. He almost coached the Suns on a couple of occasions and I believe would have been a great one in the NBA.
4. Coach Mike Krzyzewski. We have been joined at the hip since 2005 as he helped me restore dignity to the USA Basketball program. A man committed to the game on all levels and without a doubt one of the best leaders of men I have ever met. He represents class beyond being just the winningest coach in college basketball.
3. Pete Newell. A Hall of Fame coach in his own right, Pete served as a mentor to me on a personal basis regarding philosophy of the game and the history of the game. Pete was one of the most intuitive basketball minds of all time and he had great influence on my philosophy, in every regard.
2. David Stern. David is considered one of the great commissioners in the history of major-league sports.
